Hello All

I have gone to a few grading sites and banknote identification sites and ebay.
But I am not confident with my ability to determine such things as condition , grade and value. What is your opinion about these two notes.

Thanks
HTx

Condition is acceptable to a lot of collectors, these are scarce notes. I'm not much at grading below VF, but I'm going to say these both would grade out to a low Fine. For values, go to realbanknotes.com and check the catalog listings.

Hello paxbrit

Thank-you for the reply. A second opinion is always helpful and appreciated.
Because if I decide to sell it on ebay, I did not want to misrepresent its condition.

I did look at the realbanknote site and ebay before starting this thread and I agree; they appear to be scarce.
The 1 Riyal is not highly valued but the 5 Riyal does have value.

I know nothing about the professional grading companies or the procedure or cost.
Do you think it would be worth the effort to have the note professionally graded ?
Would the increased market place value (from being a certified note) make up for the grading cost ?

I believe with PMG, the top grading service, post-1961 notes can be certified and graded for $12 each, but you'll have to find someone to assist you with that, or you have to submit 25 notes minimum. Check their website for details, some shops or collectors are PMG affiliates and can perhaps help with that.

If the cost to submit and the postal expense is under $20 each, I think you will recoup your investment with grading. I'm no expert on the graded note market, but it seems to me the markup is at least a third for common material and double for scarcer stuff. There are buyers in all grades. There is a reason why grading services are doing well, and it's not hype, the collector and investor market see the value added and shrug off the markups, to a general extent.

Thank you paxbrit for your informative input.
I'll do some research.

They look "About Fine" from the photos but is that a biro squiggle on the second note, if so tag "ink mark" onto that description.

Looking at the sales histories on Realbanknotes.com, I think you're looking at about $200 retail for the pair, with an upper limit of around $350. You will benefit from grading as long as you can avoid a membership fee and just pay for the grading of two notes.

The value of any item is what is agreed between a willing seller and a willing buyer at that place and time, no more, no less, so presenting your notes in a certified and graded condition to buyers is going to aid you in a sale.

I personally would not grade, maybe it can give a few people confidence, but for a lot of buyers grading does not entice them to buy banknotes.
