Your 500 Mark note is indeed a collectible. It's in very nice XF grade, and worth about $800 in that condition. Go down to a shop TODAY, and get a mylar sleeve to put the note in. Don't take the note with you, leave it at home, you don't want to lose a half-grade by knocking it around. You took good photos, take them again with a dark background, and again once you get it in a sleeve. You can sell it yourself on ebay, not difficult to do. Just require PayPal payment and registered mail only in US.

Just checked ebay for listings of these, an XF in dirty and stained condition is priced at $900. Yours is a better note, so $900 is probably a better estimate of value. In About Uncirculated condition, this note runs over $1200-$1500

Yes, the XF grade also comes in two divisions, numbers 40 and 45. This is a nice clean note, with no visible horizontal fold, so it grades a 45, which is Choice Extra Fine. The drawback is, unless you have the note certified and graded by a professional grading company, you can't list it on ebay with a grading number, its' just an Extra Fine. Which is fair, there are too many vendors who would put a number on their grading without standing behind it like the services do. If you have a decent coin shop near you, when you go to buy a sleeve to store the note in, inquire about grading submittal through them. Also look at the wervices' websites, start with pmgnotes.com, PCGScurrency.com, and worldbanknotegrading.com. You want to find a service that is well-known and will accept a single note submission, some of them require 25 note minimums.

I think it is still convertible into Euros on Germany.

True, but conversion can only be done at a DeutcheBundesBank. Good luck finding one in the US.
You'll get about 255 Euros out of it, less costs of Registered Mail and a long-distance phone call to Germany to get the address. About 300 US dollars less expenses. Not a very good deal for a collectible selling for double or triple that amount.

I would suggest that you heed these kind advices here. It is better to put the banknotes into a plastic sleeve and put them up on ebay to get a better return on the value of these banknotes. As to phoning the central bank in Germany, that is not necessary. One can e-mail them. They even have a form which one has to print out and fill out to mail in with the banknotes on their website along with the postal addresses. They will charge you for the registered mail if you want cash because they do not want to be responsible for any loss in the postal transit. BUT they will only electronically deposit money into your bank account which can be done for free. For US or out of EU, it will attract exchange rate fees from the banks. :( If one is planning to visit Germany, one can exchange DM into euros in person at any branch. The addresses are on their website. All the German banknotes issued since 1948 and coins since 1949 are fully exchangeable for euros at the central bank indefinitely. But, early 1948-50s banknotes are often worth more than its face value and same with high denominations like 500 DM notes are better off being sold. And certain German coins that are not exchangeable from my memory is older 2 DM coins and silver 5 DM coins (not sure about this but my memory says so).
