I came along this cent today. It's magnetic but I'm not sure how much it weighs. Does it look real?

No. It's looks like some altered the coin by replating the coin. Also the date looks fishy too. It looks like they have also altered the date too. Not sure what the actual year is.

The second 4 is smaller than the first 4, which is pretty fishy to me.

This is a common practice of counterfeiting coins.

Very general observation. Some help for you is: on a 1944 Wheat cent the 4's are of equal shape and size. Your coin's second 4 is shaped a bit different than the first one plus it is smaller - making it an altered 1943 steel cent seeing it sticks to a magnet!!

Thank Mark. I had a feeling the date was altered too. Good point.

Sorry, it looks identical (porous surface) to the fake Chinese 1944 copy I bought some years ago so I could see what a fake steel cent looks like.

What is the weight? That would be another factor to tell.

The strike is also weak and mushy, wear is uneven on the rim besides the date as mentioned.

Anybody notice that the '44S was labelled as a 1943 on the PCGS pic?

Second 4 is wrong, strike is weak with bad rims, yet has finned rims on the right side? Looks like a Chinese fake.
