Hey everyone. I just received a Peru 1790 IJ 8 Reales coin, but I suspect it is fake. It weighs 27.1 Grams (scale says 27.2, settles on 27.1) according to my scale (with the wear on it, in my experience it should weigh a little less) also where the top of the obverse meets the edge, there seems to be a little separation. Also where this occurs, the rim is smooth for about 20mm. The toning seems to be washed on. I posted this on another forum, "Insider" asked me to tag @swamperbob thanks everyone for your help!

Really looks so odd to me but I don't have experience with these coins- just doesn't look right compared to my mental picture of what a coin should look like.

I agree, furthermore I just realized this seller has 2 more coins for sale (different years) both with the same yellowish swiped on looking patina. One of them obviously having the same field not meeting the rim issue. A friend over at another forum said that he's now 99.99% sure its counterfeit "The edge is suppose to be continuous w/2 breaks, yours has the circle and square punched in once, then punched in next to it and so on. "

Was actually going to do a post on these as I saw one sold tonight... It is indeed a modern Asian fake - recognized from experience, but aside from that, it is poorly executed enough that it needs to be obvious just from looking at it.

Note that the 1786 Lima piece that the seller was also offering has been around for years now and pops up frequently on ebay - sold more than a few times by fairly reputable sellers (unwittingly, one assumes but doesn't excuse). The 1790 Lima seems to be a bit of a newcomer, but the ones I have been seeing often are in the company of the 1786 and other related pieces, so clearly emanating from the same source(s).

Following, that 1795 Mexico has up also comes from the same sources... and has also been around for quite a while (maybe a decade?). Also easy to detect and super easy to recognize b/c of the characteristic weak date and bad denticles right below that.

1805 is fake as well.

Realeswatcher is correct the coin is a modern numismatic forgery that comes from China. The edge design is also incorrectly punched into the die using a two segment punch. The arc seams along the perimeter of the coin are the most common feature that these cheap Chinese knock offs have in common. It is due to the way the image is transferred to the mold. One or more of the transfer mediums shrinks slightly necessitating a gap or a flat area to make up the difference in diameter.

Recently I have seen many new (lower quality) examples of this same type - perhaps 7 - 8 entirely new fakes. They are essentially worth only melt plus a few dollars for collectors of forgeries. I pay no more than $15 over melt for interesting new dates, mules and wrong King types if there is zero silver content. Most perhaps 9/10 have no silver content.

p912 you were correct about the weight - the wear on this coin should be accompanied by a significant weight loss - several tenths of a gram. A weight nearer 26.5 would be far less suspicious. I believe the coin will prove to be too thick. SG near 9.0 means it is copper nickel.
