A bittersweet acquisition, now that I completed a general Mexico Republic Type set I don't know where to go. Like a very smart guy said "the worst thing about a coin collection is completing it." I remember talking to Dave O'Harrow a few years ago (ca 2001 - 2002) and he said it was an impossible set to complete if you include the Hookneck issues. I have been hunting for Hookneck counterfeits since and the only examples available are of the 8R. In 15 years since I have been very specifically hunting I have yet to see a contemporary counterfeit Hookneck minor - even one in a private collection. Dave speculated that the 2R would be most difficult to obtain and my presumption was that he either had or knew someone that had the other denominations. Even Iturbides are available (toughest is the 1/2R in my opinion.) Report this Post to the Staff

Also referred to as "El Aguila de Perfil" in Spanish, it was a high relief design that caused striking problems. It was replaced by a design referred to as the facing eagle which is a far more well known design. In my opinion it is one of the most beautiful designs ever used. Report this Post to the Staff

The 2R types in virtually every series are targeted for forgery nearly as often as the 8Rs. I was merely relaying the comment as an example of a coin that Dave believed did not exist. He said he had never seen a contemporary counterfeit Hookneck 2R and doubted they ever existed. So the rest of the minors may not exist either. I have never seen anything other than the 8R. We were at some bar in Clayton or Garner and I showed you a Mexico portrait 8 reales. You pointed out some discrepancies and I did the whole XRF thing, shame on NGC. That was fun, but it was not a contemporary counterfeit. Gosh, I gave you my last CC a few years ago in Scottsdale, a cap and rays 2 reales . Right now my pursuits are mainly academic. Helping out Don and Brad, plus a very interesting theory about the migration of symbolism. I like collecting coins, Mexico states copper are interesting, trying to figure out what Santoyo was up to in Sonora, but again it's academic. Don't care for Mexico colonial one, two, or four escudos, and very picky about the eights, also don't care for cobs. Maybe Brasil? Falo Portuguese Report this Post to the Staff

If we all like one thing it would be boring and very costly. I collect Brazilian counterfeits mostly 960Rs struck on off metal flans or struck with forged dies. Report this Post to the Staff
