I don't know the key markers for this coin and I am just a layman. That said, I believe you are correct to be suspicious. The wear does not appear to be kosher and I have to wonder about the miners face and the bears ear and foremost leg. Let others more knowledgeable than me weigh in. Also, welcome, you came to the right place to ask.

I'm not liking the missing detail of the pan, the front of his hat and his beard or the position of the mintmark. The overall metal looks suspect. The bubbly blobs in the end of UNITED look like a bad sign and the same issue at the end at the hyphen after STATES - A vote for fake here.

"Liberty" does not appear to be evenly spaced from the rim -- The L and I are much closer than the T and Y. I vote fake.
Edit to add: The mint mark looks like it's too far to the left as well.

Perhaps it's the picture, but the one thing that clearly differentiates the two (to me) is the ground that the miner is kneeling on. On the genuine example, it's a solid bar all the way across. Half of it is missing on the OP's coin.

Also, the miner's right knee looks washed out in the OP's example.

It's a slightly better than average counterfeit, specifically made to fool collectors, I'm sure.
There are bad California out there too. But none of them hold up when compared to the real deal.

I'm wading right in with the confidence of experience with this series ... The supposed 1925-S California shown by the OP is NOT a genuine example ... and alas there are many of these somewhat deceiving counterfeit now available on the market. to the CCF Mortiis ... there are true experts here to help. You have come to the right place to get some help ... mtuma3 posted an authentic circulated example ... here is one from my collection in gem MS: Compare the differences ... they should be obvious relative to your 'coin' ... 1 925-S California Diamond Jubilee Half - PCGS MS66+/CAC Hope this helps ... I politely suggest that you return your 'coin' ASAP. David

Thank you very much for welcome words and for your answers. Beefer518, it isn't magnetic. This coin was purchased in a bag with other coins on flee market, so it cost me almost nothing. It will be marked as fake and will stay in my collection :)
