Well, I was at work (again) when I stumbled onto a rather interesting 1999 D Dime. It caught my attention because it felt funny, and after looking at it for a little while, I figured out why... the rim of the coin is kind of beveled...

It still has the reeding on it, but it only occupies a narrow band in the middle of the edge of the coin... almost as if the edge was honed to a blade... (though not literally blade-like)

My scanner isn't working at the moment, and I don't have a good way of taking a picture of the edge of the coin, so here is a crude rendering of what I'm talking about... looking at it from the edge of the coin, it kinda looks like this:

1999-D-Dime-With-Odd-Edges?

The flat part on top still has the reeding on it. It goes all the way around the coin, though it thins and thickens /slightly/ on opposite ends of the coin. The coin itself is in very good shape, and seems to have a slight "struck-through-grease" effect just behind FDR's neck...

Might have been ground down. Without pictures I have no idea though. Regardless, it's not going to be worth anything more then 10 cents

Without pictures that would be my guess as well; someone just filed off or ground down the rims.

Normal coin edges have some bevel to them. A photograph would be necessary to tell anything more.

The edge of an upset planchet is rounded. As the coin is struck the planchet expands outward making contact with the collar at roughly the middle of the edge. As the strike progress the center of the edge becomes broader and you now have a bevel from the rim down to the flat section of the edge. The stronger the strike the broader the edge and the less bevel there is. On proof coins the edge is fully struck and the edge meets the rim at a square corner with no bevel.

Hello to all

Funny you should mention this particular coin. I live in Texas and the coin you described, well, I have one too. 1999 D Roosevelt dime. How odd is that? And you are right the coin does have an odd shape, and feel. My scale says 2.2g.

Only, the big difference between my coin and yours is, my dime is a solid dark brown, like the color of a penny.

Anybody have any ideas?
