I like to think that this Half Dime saw some action during the gold rush and made the trip west in some body's pocket and then sat in a cabinet drawer for years. One of the great things about coin collecting is the historical speculation. there are several interesting die cracks on the reverse.

I'll agree with an EF-40 details grade for this coin, and I also agree that the reverse has the extra-bright look of a coin that has been cleaned.

The 1849 Half Dime has at least two overdate varieties, the 1849/8 and 1849/6. They are not obvious at all but they do carry a premium over the standard date, according to the PCGS price guide. Can you tell whether you have one of the overdates?

Nice coin, cleaned or not. The die cracks certainly add interest (at least to me!)
