This topic comes up often enough. I picked this up today, after deciding that the V.D.B. was spot on and the mm placement seems to match position 4. I could be wrong about that, so definitely share if you disagree. My main concern is the dark patch behind the mm. Is that a deal breaker suggesting an added mm, or do we stand a chance? Please share your thoughts on everything. Authentic? Altered? Grade? Value?.... I paid $500 after much haggling, and got a money back guarantee should I determine it to be altered. TIA

I'll be interested to hear what more experienced collectors say, but that mintmark makes me wicked nervous. I don't like the pattern of scratches underneath the S that do not continue onto the letter. It looks added to me.

Looks like a laid on S. Fields near the S are disturbed with small scratches that don't flow with rest of the striatum.

Questionable, my gut says it's alright though as I think I can see the die chip in the upper loop. Good for for the TPG's.

I, too, am concerned about the scratches under the MM. Also, there is a certain amount of wear on the coin and the MM seems to have less wear. Not and expert on this one.... so....

Thanks to all of the responses thus far. I am adding a pic from the PCGS page that is dedicated to this coin and it's verification. It seems to exhibit a similar scratch pattern beneath the S...

On the PCGS example the striatum and stretch marks continue without disruption. The one you are showing is very notably NOT continuous.

I'm wary as the date is worn But the MM is strong - if it doesn't make sense then .................. plus the discoloration around the S.

Die chip left wheat stalk=confirmed repro
It may be a glued addon , the scratch pattern is different angles than die scratches.

Not seeing a die chip on left wheat stalk - mint mark position looks reasonable along with spacing of dots on VDB. Can't tell if mintmark is leaning to the right or is straight up/down like it should be.

Crazyb0. One would think that it is either a repro out an altered s, but both? I'm leanin away from saying it's a Repro, it just doesn't seem to be.

Tough call ... we want to help.
I'm not an expert ... but have some knowledge ...
Appears to me that the scratch marks surrounding the mint mark are not normal from the mint ... so my call is added mm.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

I lean towards genuine over not. Mint mark seems to be the right style and location. The slanted midsection of the B in VDB looks correct. Definitely worth getting it graded.
