Cherrypicked these for $66 for the one with color & $48 for the other. So, why would I pay "so much" and why was it a killer deal?

Just spit-balling here, so be gentle on me. Are they both very near dates ( VAM 54)?

A close-up of the numeral 1 in the date would help to confirm.

You somehow cherrypicked not one, but two, 1900 Micro O's with the diagnostic die scratch at UM. Well done.

Yup. Both VAM 22A1's. What are the odds I find 2 in a week!!

Adam, this isn't the VAM 5 micro-o but it is the same obverse die and in the same family

I did the same thing you did Spense, I clicked on the sort by date position and 54, 57 and 50 populated as the very near date position die pairings. Knowing Cascade, I knew he would not be excited about any of these so I backed up and started checking the privately minted (the only reason I didn't at first was they're not micro o mintmarks) and lo and behold - the killer obverse pup that paralyse spotted and obviously Cascade spotted in the auction photos.
This is a perfect example of how the "sort by" options on VAMworld can get you twisted sometimes.

For anyone who wants to learn about silver contemporary Morgan counterfeits and the "Family" here is a great info site Dan Carr created. He's an avid collector of these...

I know very little about Morgans, so bear with me.

So these are contemporary counterfeits? What kind of value do they have?

Yes, they're contemporary, and in many cases have inspired a certain subset of Morgan fans to concentrate on them. A few of them were actually awarded VAM status before their true nature was known, being that good. Then, rather than shun them and push them aside into obscurity, the VAMming community at large decided to embrace them and accept what they were. The better-known ones trade at values approaching (and maybe even exceeding, in grade) the "real" ones.

You'll find this same sentiment for contemporary counterfeits in other earlier issues, as well.

Messydesk (a major force in the VAM community) has a pretty gnarly theory on how & why these "Family" C.C. Morgans were produced. Check out this thread...

Great finds. I didn't even know about the "family." Knowledge is Power.

Well, I've learned a bunch with this thread. @cascade, thanks for this info, especially the link to @messydesk's explanation.

I'm not into Morgans and VAMs but what a fascinating story. 29 different die pairings is incredible, but I guess they didn't want to draw suspicion by making more of a certain date than the mint did. It still seems crazy that they used up to 7 die pairings for a single year (but I imagine these VAMs might just be different states of some of the same dies). And it cracks me up that we call these "privately made" instead of "counterfeits".

I show total mintage of 41469000 for the 6 years known so far. If Dan Carr is correct that possibly "millions" of these entered circulation, wow. 2 million would be 5% of the circulating dollars for those years. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the casino scheme theory. It's like reverse money laundering. I bet those slot machines were really loose.

Are you sure this isn't VAM 22C1? http://www.vamworld.com/1900-O+VAM-22C1. Yours and vamworld's all also seem to share the same garbled left side of M in America.
