I agree with basebal21 - it doesn't look like a mark from contact with another coin. To me, it looks more like a die issue.

I think its more of a strike through error, but its tiny. It also detract from getting that MS70 grade, I agree there are enough modern day MS70 that has flaws in them, and its a shame that all TPG is just doing it for profiteering.

Quote: I have posted in other threads how I have had two respectable dealers form two different locales, and at two different times, You need quotes and a disclaimer on this. Quote: I thought he would also be a good one to questioned concerning the TPGs, his replies were parallel to those of my friend concerning the grading process and other issues. This dealer has a great reputation both locally and on his huge ebay store - oozentoo is his ebay name. Earl I do like you but seriously you need to stop with that nonsense. Here is your source http://goccf.com/t/268047

I dont know exactly, if it was an inclusion in the planchet could that be still considered as a 70 strike?

I agree that, ideally, a coin should be graded "as struck." I also agree that the mark on Liberty's hand on the ASE does not look like contact from another coin or a ding. As for grading, consider major errors such as 85% off-center being slabbed as MS-65. The ASE looks to be an existing planchet flaw or struck through debris. I don't know about your $5, Mark. It does look like a scratch.

I used to work in an industrial bearing factory (some were up to 20 feet in diameter) and when we were machining the blanks alot of "inclusions" showed up on the machined surfaces that rendered the bearing races unusable, and they were even that small. But seeing it's just a coin it was passable?

My first thought when I saw that hit/slash on her wrist was some type of struck thru. That's what I was waiting to hear. A few of you have suggested that. Thanks. Keep the thread going as you see fit...

I was under the impression that graders grade using a 5x loupe, and that if it requires anything higher to see it, they consider it not there. That might explain Mark1959's coin, but not sure about the original poster's coin. It looks like it is visible with the naked eye, and certainly with a 5x.

Quote: I was under the impression that graders grade using a 5x loupe I also read that 5x magnification is the standard for TPGs. Can someone confirm this?

Plus don't the big three use 3 different graders then average the results for a final grade? How could all 3 pass at least the 2013 as a 70? I read somewhere for grading they use 5X and on varieties and error coins they use up to a 10X for verification.
