I agree with John1. It looks like a ding from another coin. Once again, ANACS messed up badly and gave it a grade of MS 70. Wrong ANACS! MS 69 is more like it.

Maybe ANACS was trying to reach their quota of 70's that day

Lol Mark good one! I just can't believe that ANACS messed up and gave it a perfect grade when there is a ding and therefore not a perfect grade.

Its not just ANACs, I have seen this same thing on MS70 ASEs from PCGS and NGC. The quota idea may not be so much a joke as a reality.
I have posted in other threads how I have had two respectable dealers form two different locales, and at two different times, tell me how they feel the MS70 is a certainty saying monster boxes get returned with pretty much 20% MS70 graded slabs.
Both people told me they started to notice it with theirs and then started to ask around other large dealers and found the same. They also both told me to start looking at MS70 ASEs to see what they were saying - things like the coin in this thread are not too awful hard to find.

So it's a common issue then. That's too bad that it happens a lot, but it is what it is. And yes, what Mark said isn't a joke now. Just wish the grading companies would do it right, not rush through it, and not half-butt it.

Quote: The quota idea may not be so much a joke as a reality. That's what scares me - I bought an NGC MS 70 - 2016 1/10th gold eagle and under 10X power there is a really small scratch on the left side reverse in the smooth fields. Now how could that be a 70? Unless it was graded 70 then the clutz who was going to slab it messed up somehow? If I dig it out tomorrow I'll post it in a separate topic.

Mark, I know right. I just can't believe how many ASE 's get the MS70 grade when there's a small nick or scratch on it. This happens way too much. I'll be interested in the topic you're going to post.

Wow. If you find your ASE and post it on CCF, I'll look at your post.

That's too bad you had to sell alot of your collection to pay those doc bill, but at least you don't have to worry about that bill anymore. Good for you about the 2 coins you got. See you later. I am going to log off. Have a great night!

You guys know that they're graded as struck right? That doesn't like like a hit from another coin as suggested. Not a fan of them at all, but when being critical need to do so from the right perspective
