This was an early private issue minted in Birmingham England and commissioned by Robert Morris, the Superintendent of Finance of the United States during the Second Continental Congress. Morris was a principal financier of the Revolutionary War, and considered after G. Washington, the second most powerful man in the United States. Morris declined Washington's offer to become the first Treasury Secretary and suggested that Alexander Hamilton should be nominated for that role. He and three other partners commissioned these coins before the end of the Revolutionary War and the design became the basis for the first United States federal pattern coinage of 1783. I saw this coin offered, but when I reached out to buy it, it had already been sold. The Crosby 2-B is the most common of the Nova Constellatio Coppers. Thoughts on grade and problems? Thanks! Mid-VF. I see nothing that would kick it out of bed. Those minor difficulties, such as the rim hits, aren't enough to really count as distractions.

VF25, better shape than many, small planchet voids and a rim bruise, usual off-center struck obverse. This is a very attractive example of a Nova, and would likely bring out the bidders.

These typically had good strikes.. especially the rays. I have no problem calling this a solid VF25.

What a great coin! Nice planchet for it's time, and nicely struck. I'm at 25, but would even consider 30.
Robert Morris. A Founding Father that I never heard of before this, which makes the coin even more important as an educational tool. Thanks for posting it.

If it could only be mine... Alas, I was a week late and a dollar short.  Seller sold the coin at a show and forgot to update his inventory online when I went to buy it. Hopefully another will come along soon.

Thanks nfine. I suspect it is a pain shared by many collectors from time to time. I guess there is always the next coin to fall in love with.

Sorry to hear that :( Better luck next time! I had similar happen to me a couple of years ago -- won an auction for a 1912-S V nickel in a PCGS VG8 holder -- seller contacted me after I paid and told me they had sold it at a show. As a gesture of goodwill, they sent me one in a PCGS VG10 holder instead, for the same price, so I was pretty happy.

Seller graded this VF+ and was asking $550 which was a more than I wanted to pay.
