The first thing to consider is your budget and patience. Deciding on grades desired for each part of the collection, in advance, not only helps in your choice, but gives you goals toward completion. A single MS 34-S is a budget buster for many, so if you go with Peace, have your goals in order before you begin. And use JBucks opinion in moderation

Quote: Peace vs. Ike. Well a set of Ikes is definitely affordable, if you go with Peace dollars there are a few (especially the 34-S) that get pricey.

I'd start with Ikes.
This thread probably belongs in a different forum.

But if you run across a good deal on a key and semi key date Peace dollar in the meantime, it would probably behoove you to grab those while you can. I guess the same goes for the tougher IKES as well. Get yourself the best Gem 73 silver issues you can, they are a lot cheaper than 1921 and 1928 Peace dollars. You can do both at the same time and get what you can when the "coin" is right and the price is good.

What are your opinions of the coin designs themselves? That's a major factor to me. I personally would go for Ike's because, overall, the design is more appealing to me. Them being generally more affordable also helps!

I would go for the Peace dollars. More of a challenge I think. (No suspect to the Ike fans)

Do both. That way you can look for either at coin shows or wherever you buy coins.

The price for the Ikes depends on how you collect them. MS-65 and better Ikes can be pricey. If you collect them by die variety, some of those are expensive.

I'm excluding Silver Ikes in this monologue, as they were prepared with care in most cases. These two issues are remarkably similar to a collector - as easy and inexpensive as you wish, or diabolically difficult if you want the truly premium examples. And the difficulty in both is not necessarily grade-dependent. Both were minted with the full knowledge that they were unlikely to circulate, and there was no motivation on the Mint's part to create outstanding results. Both are characterized by indifferent strikes and iffy surfaces, moreso Ikes for the former and Peace dollars for the latter. Lustrous Peace dollars are as difficult and worthy as Ikes with full strikes in the cheek and neck. Superb Gem examples are equally difficult; PCGS has only two Peace dollars in MS68 and ZERO Clad Ikes in that grade. Both have issues with no PCGS 67's, where 66 is Top Pop. Of the two, frankly, I think the Ikes will be the more difficult, the higher a standard you hold. Here's what I'd consider a pretty well-struck Ike (Images courtesy of PCGS CoinFacts). Pay particular attention to the jawline, lower line of the neck, and eagle's left (viewer's right) lower leg and tailfeathers. Learn that, 'cause you ain't gonna see it often.

Thank you to all who've responded, I appreciate the feedback. I'm leaning toward Ike's at this point as a lead into complete PCGS SBA and Sacagawea/Native sets.

Well, you have to start somewhere. 1977-S PCGS PR69DCAM on it's way to a newly labeled blue box.
