I do think you used "sharpen" when you worked this image up. Take a close look at the date, I am not sure but I think there are a number of DDO 1942's. What is there not to like about a no distracting mark 1942 nickel like this. Too hard for me to grade.

After reading nickel Guy's post and re checking date. I have to agree, that date looks mightily enticing. Looks thicker than normal!
Grade? Mmmmhm, I'm seeing corrosive-like pores, it might just be me but it looks like it has been in some chemical? Although it does seem to have nice luster so it could be from an over polished die? I'll give a range of AU50 to 58.

I think spruett just used too much resolution or sharpened the image. I bet this looks a lot less noisy than the images show. I was thinking AU58 or MS63 maybe MS64 but just can't say any of those with the image.

I do edit the majority of pics I post and sometimes use "Sharpen" but maybe only a tad on these (can't remember ). Ever since my LG G3 gave up the ghost, I've been trying to work with this G6 to take comparable coin photos but, I don't think it's gonna fly. The original images all look grainy like this and I hate it. I'll post the original pics with cropping only, using Photoshop Express and no other adjustments to see if there is a noticeable difference. Maybe I'm trying too hard.

Okay, here are the pics I took. I have only cropped them without using any other sort of editing (not even rotation adjustment): Is that any better?

And these are the pics without cropping and only size reduction for posting using the CCF Image Optimizer (set at the maximum 85 image quality): This represents the closest I can focus with the G6. From what I remember, the G3 could focus a little closer and maybe that's making the difference? I have not been satisfied with the pics I'm able to take now.

The luster flowing around the fields are unbroken and the key high points remain without circulation rub, so it is uncirculated. The second set of photos are much superior to the first set. A grade in MS is difficult simply because the bright white areas are impossible to read. From what I can see at least a 63 with an honest shot at 64. More importantly, that 42 in the date looks appetizing

As far as a graded strike I feel this is an easy 65 . But maybe badly mishandled ,hence all that noise . Nice mint luster abounds this coin. IMHO the noise is NOT photo related .

Maybe this nickel was struck in 1942 and then bagged up but the batch was not circulated until after WWII and was kept stored until after the silver War Nickels stopped being minted after 1945. Maybe these light surface marks are "bag marks" but there are no deep cuts or real signs of any circulation. I would grade it MS64+ from the new pics. Just a guess, I was not there at the time.

Looking at the new pics, I would still grade lower than most here. Fantastic luster though. MS61-63. Some general minor impacts, and some wear on Monticello.
Seriously, that date definitely looks like a candidate for doubling.

Lots of chatter, I'm probably at 63.

Thanks for the input and sorry again about the pics. I'll have to create a new topic elsewhere about the combination of things I may be able to do to get clearer images. I agree about the highlights and thought they may be a problem for grading purposes. I did notice something a little funny on the 2 in the date. I'll take a closer look and see what's going on. Thanks again!

I played around with the lighting, focus (AF vs. MF), exposure settings and lowered the resolution from 13MP to 9.7MP. I weeded out a bunch and think I've come up with the best from this evening's photo shoot. I only cropped them and have reduced size for posting. Are these better for grading purposes? Also, I took some closeups that I need to prepare for posting because I think that a lot of the "noise" on the photos is because of LDS or VLDS surfaces. There are heavy flow lines, orange peel and also significant polishing lines. There is a decent amount of chatter but, I think it's not as bad as it seemed in the previous pics. I'll get those pics up shortly.

I have never given a grade opinion on any coin b/c I have been sitting in the background studying the opinions of others for some time now. I must be getting close to being able to play the game b/c my first thoughts (with the second pics) were MS63. I too thought the first ones were sharpened a bit.
This is beautiful!
