Why is this nickel extra thick? I put it side by side with another nickel for comparison.

Is that a die dot on the side of the nose, in front of his eye?

If so, that's a marker for one of the '89 DDOs.

Mrzllewellyn, PM me, I'll send you some info that may help you out. The thickness is because of the angled hit of the hammer(_obverse) die. More pressure was applied in area of wide rim causing(forcing) metal of planchet to be pushed upwards along collar of press, called Misaligned Die (MAD)

You're completely missing the point. This forum is here to share information with the 100,000 pairs of eyeballs that visit every day and all those that find it in searches in the future. If he just emails this thing to everyone then the topics become worthless. We're not here to solve each other's questions via email, that's just silly.

Another point to ponder. False rims are common on the misaligned die strikes. Generally the hammer die produces the effect.

When I see false rims on obverse and reverse opposite each other I tend to question the coins diameter. This can be a very subtle sign or difference.

The current images are skewed a bit so from my end I'm not able to make an assessment concerning diameter.

What I'm getting at is the potential for a wide collar issue. Check the diameter and edge for signs. If nothing out of the ordinary, then rule it out. Thanks, Doug.
