Okay, and told a coworker I would look in to this. I have no idea what this is. So I have a New jersey State Quarter where the NEW in NJ is missing, and the SEY in jersery is faint. the JE in jersey looks fine, as well as the "87" in the year 1787 is fine, but the 1 and last 7 are faint. The rest of the coin, to my knowledge, looks perfectly fine. Hopefully these images show you all you need to see.

Also, where it says "quarter dollar" on the obverse of the coin, where the new jersey is faded on the other side, looks fine and isn't faded at all.

@aw, interesting coin, but no added premium--your coworker can safely spend this one.

Although it doesn't carry a premium there is nothing wrong with saving it as a great example of a Grease Filled Die.

Struck Through Grease. Not enough to add a premium, but still a good example of it. :)

Here is a link for a few posts on different strike issues, including the Struck Through Grease one with images that will help you understand what happened with your coin.
