Hi gang I was fumbling around ebay again and saw this 22k ring. Now, I don't wear any rings, chains or jewelry myself but have nothing against those that do...but I saw this gold dragon ring and could not help notice what a difference photographs of the same item can be of it. take this ring, for example. if you look at the regular and the enlarged photos down in the listing, you will see the dragon with a short snout and nothing at the end of it. but in other photos, the dragon has a long snout and some kind of appendage-looking thing (like a leg) at the end of the snout. Can any of you give a possible explanation of how it can look so different in the photos? We've all seen coins or whatever that make the same coin look completely different in other photos depending on the light, angle of camera, etc., but this one baffles me... and I am easily baffled. here is the link... http://www.ebay.com/itm/22-karat-Ch...AOSwT~9Wi-Bt

The link shows only one picture therefore making it difficult to see what you see. Sorry

I can't make heads or tails (so to speak) from any of those pictures -- couldn't even find the snout. My guess is that the surface is highly polished and textured so you're going to get all kinds of interesting reflections depending on the angle.

The first word is all I need to know to run away. Chinese gold. Kinda like German silver...
They probably have a bag full of them.

moxking, if you or anybody else can help me out here, what is wrong with Chinese gold if it is stamped 9999? do you think Chinese gold is bad, or it might be an imitation, or?
I will admit that I am reluctant to buy ANY gold without some sort of documentation. I have some Korean gold with c.o.a.'s but the problem it is written in Korean!
I would not buy ANYTHING if it was coming directly from China, just too many fakes of every kind.... phones, coins, etc. I know bc I was in the Philippines and bought some Chinese fake watches, a phone, etc. but I knew what I was getting into? My $10 "Rolex" watch stopped working after a month haha.
of course, there is a possibility a seller can buy stuff from China, ship it to the USA and then attempt to pass it off as real (hey, its coming from a USA address, right?)
any input would be appreciated.. thanks, mike

I see that long appendage on all the photos, just different shadowing from lighting. Might be a bad rendition of the tendrils on the dragon's snout. Nothing wrong with Chinese gold jewelry, especially from a reputable seller. Gold is huge in China and most jewelry is 24k. It's just the US gold coins made in China that you have to worry about...

When I first looked at it I thought there's no way that's the same ring. But after studying the photos for awhile, the differences in appearance are indeed from reflectivity, compression and depth of field. The thing in the "snout" is always present but looks different from various perspectives due to the cut of that feature.
I don't think there's deception going on, just bad presentation. I'd worry more about whether those hallmarks are legit: the number looks plated over. Anyway, since you're not a ring guy, I'd forget about it and leave it for somebody else to worry about

Biedercoins, I agree... I am pretty sure it is the same ring, but why the shiny spot is over only where the "916" purity is at? as you said, looks plated over, or, if it not plated over but polished, for some reason the owner wanted to shine this area over for some reason.
I have not decided on it yet, but I would like a nice gold ring for once in my life as I am not young anymore. I suppose that if I did buy it, I could have it tested and if it was not 22k, I would stand a pretty good chance of getting my money back through eBay/paypal.
in any case, thank you all for your responses... mike
