I went to my first coin show today. It was an awesome experience
walked around the whole floor 2 or 3 times.

My first experience I did a lot of listening to the
interaction between sellers and buyers.

What I learned was the first goal of the seller was to compensate
for the show. Sell cheap early. For the buyer should buy early.

Also I learned coin drops more than likely still exist at pre-coin
shows. That's a new thing to me never thought of that.

Another thing you probably won't find all the coins your missing
from your collection. Not one 1973s in the whole show. A coin
that might be worth a dollar eludes me.

Some dealers are there for the fun others are all about the money.
I could tell almost immediately. The only reason I would look
through an all about the money dealer was cause they might have
that one thing I was missing.

Oh and this is for sellers and buyers. One dude looking through
a coin book on top of three other coin books. That means I cannot
look through that book to the side. For the seller this means a
buyer has to wait for some person to move. The seller loses and
another buyer loses while they wait and like me just move on
sometimes.

Then another thing if your a coin collector never sell your coins
for there silver or gold. why cause you will just get the current
silver or gold prices not the coin price.

The dealer is not there to make you happy you should thank him/her
for the sale but not tell them your life story. Most of them
even the non greedy ones don't what to hear it.

Take a little extra money with you just in case. You might not
see those coins again.

One of the sellers had a 1955 double die PCGS. He was an older.
I asked if he would let me take pictures of the coin. He was fine
with it even though I could not afford the asking price $1900.

All in All it was a good learning experience. Before you buy
your coins online go to a show first and see what's there.

Cannot wait till the next show.

Rest in Peace

Great to hear your impressions concerning your first show. Especially since you did such a good job of including specific interactions.

What did you find that you purchased?

I was there just to pickup two coins and only got one.

The bank closes early on Saturday. If it didn't I would have
a proof set from 1959 all they way up to 2017. Since I
only had little cash and was there more for amusement.

I got a 1968s business strike penny almost looked proof. I think
it was cleaned an buffed. a couple of 1943 steel cents. In total
I spent $3. I could have spent much more but didn't know what to
expect. Next show I hope to end my hunt for memorial cents.

Rest in Peace

Sounds like you enjoyed yourself, so that's good.

As for the guy hogging all the coin books -- that was no accident. He wanted first pick and he got there first.

If that show is a regular show (say once a month), and the dealers know you're looking for a particular coin, some of them will have it at the next show. They generally don't haul everything they have for sale to every show. They rotate their inventory.

Hope you get to go to another show soon! They really are a lot of fun.

Interesting your perception of dealers. At local shows there will be a number of dealers that make a living selling coins, but the bulk of a local show will be hobbyist dealers that enjoy the business of coins, but don't really need the money it brings.

It is very difficult going to a how looking for a specific date/mm/grade. It will almost never be there. Its easier if you go with the idea of finding a nice coin, like I'm going to go and try to find a nice Standing Lib quarter or Mercury dime in BU and better. That you should be able to find.

Coin shows are an excellent place to catch up with dealers who also use ebay.
In some of their quieter moments at the show, catch up with them and talk BRIEFLY with them, but always bear in mind not to be wasting any of their time. In other words, try to establish a good numismatic relationship them.

The personal contact will make your subsequent ebay purchases more reassuring, because you have some idea with whom you have been dealing with.

Do this sort of thing over many years, and you end up building a good idea of how the coin dealing industry works.

I NEVER take a credit card to a coin show. I take cash; the amount of cash I allow myself is my budget for the show. If you wish to buy an item for which you do not have enough cash, then put a deposit on it, and funds transfer days later, after the show.

MY strategy is look around the whole of the show and not buy anything. Then, sit down over a cup of coffee, and consider what you have short listed. Go back to the appropriate dealer(s), and negotiate for your chosen items.

When it comes to the hogs, I've got no pride against asking "Can I look at the so-and-so underneath". Most dealers are quietly supportive as it increases their sales. Same for the man-spreaders who put their coins on one case, paperwork on another while using the 3rd to look at something.

Andrew99, yes I would say 67% of people there had been hobbyist dealers.
That's what made the experience better.

sel_69l, I did ask for business cards and did try to relate to
the sellers. However mostly they could not relate. they just could not
talk to the buyer on a simple basis or maybe I didn't give it the
best try. Either way fun is fun. I'm going to have fun with them
next time.

Oh I forgot to mention the selling grabber. The seller that ignores you
when they've a prospective buyer. Until someone buys don't ignore the
people that could buy.
