Hey All I am just asking this question because I have many error Coins that I have collected over the years and my question is. For a coin to be a true error the error has to be risen up off the face of the coin it can not be indented correct?

A "struck through" error is usually indented into the coin. Unless it's a Struck Through Grease then the letters or numbers are just missing or very weak.

Really depends on the type of error. Some don't raise up or sink down at all, as it's an error with the shape. Some rise up because something fell off the die. Some sink down because something got in the way of the die. Some aren't even related to the die, like a unstuck planchet error. Some don't have to do with a planchet, like a struck on foreign object error.

Are you referencing coins post strike I assume? Those coins with reverse images, or funky colors, mixing or distorted details, Strike Doubling as MD or DDD? all of these are just plain damaged coins. Coins with "Cuds, Cracks and Cruds"(my pet term) are errors only in the sense of machine part degeneration, otherwise known as die wear/attrition, Typical mass machining products which happen on all coins, all mints. While these errors are replicated, they do change in states as damaged dies further deteriorate, i.e. longer die cracks. Some mint produced error coins as off-center strikes, partial collars are more a one of a kind error, these I consider a "true error coin". Doubled dies are "error coins" per se, but are a product of die manufacture, not strike error...these are duplicate coins emanating from one die for it's lifetime, changing only slightly per die state. A Little Johnnie in the Garage, manmade error coin is a worthless damaged piece of metal.

Quote: I was just making sense of some of the more random errors I do have compared to the true errors I have . See, you gotta get over the idea of thinking it makes sense. This is numismatics. We spend money buying money, and we pay more for the screwups. Where does that make sense?

Brilliant quote SsuperDdave! If I had to make a living out of collecting coins, I would have starved years ago.
