Hello All I am new to the coin collecting world having inherited a small collection from my grandfather. I along with my 12 year old daughter are working together and are interested in Newfoundland Coins first and Canadian coins second. Being new we are having a hard time distinguishing the small differences in some coins and rules we should follow with our collections ie cleaning- to clean or not to clean, best places to find bulk lots etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated

randrews74You'll find many helpful members here, some who are fans of Newfoundland coins. I am a Nova Scotian with a few provincial coins. When to clean a coin, never. Cleaning a coin may hurt the resale value, original luster, toning, surface texture. It is not recommended. Coin experts will note if a coin is cleaned and collectors will place less value on that coin. Bulk lots, check some auction sites, Heritage. Colonial Acres. https://coins.ha.com/https://www.colonialacres.com/Auction-s/325.htm br / A site with good info on coins of the Provinces is; http://www.coinsandcanada.com/Here is the Provincial coins area. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...rovinces.phpHope you and your daughter have lots of fun in your collecting and information searches.

I like Newfoundland and all Canadian coins. Listen to SilverDon up there. He made a good post for you.

Another few things to consider:
1. Join a local coin club-there must be something in St. John's 2. Check out any coin shops in the area, but don't be in a hurry to buy much until your knowledge has increased. 3. Go to any nearby coin shows if there are any, and the same caution about buying applies.

Use the Charleton. Also Barry Borselino has written an awesome work and you can get access to it for for free if you search postings on this site.
Good luck and feel free to ask me anything on NL coins. I'd be glad to help.

to CCF Great advice by "SilverDon" and "Oriole" If you feel more confident in your ability to grade (& appreciate the value of your person-person purchases) I would also suggest you may want to try buying "bulk" from ebay (or a member here once/if you've got enough posts/& are permitted to do so). Good luck & enjoy!
