A friend knows nothing about coins and is selling his Dad's collection that was given to him. He asked me to help him. Here are some pics of an 1897 V-nickel that I would like help grading despite the damage to the REV (which is a huge shame). In hand this piece has brilliant, original luster all over its surface - lighting makes dull spots in the pics. So please: 1. Tell me what you think the grade would be. 2. Tell me how much value would be knocked off from the marks on the REV. Please tell me why you grade it what you do so I can better explain to him also. The ribbon and to its left on the REV is puzzling to me. Was this a weak strike? Possible Struck Through Grease? Or is it simply some sort of PMD that flattened the details only in that area?    *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I would grade it as AU DETAILS. And price it at 50% or less of catalog.

AU-58 details (graffiti). Lucky to get half of retail, agree.

That is a shame. The reverse looks more like a rub, damage on the "highs", V downwards, fields left and right, mostly left then down across ribbon to CE. Like the coin itself was slid across a hard grainy surface. Think like under a book on a dirty counter surface, could be where the "graffatti" (don't think it is) came from as well. Have to agree with an AU53 Dets, with out the scratches based solely on slight wear would have been AU58+, that wear on reverse and little on crown and front of hair knocked it outta MS.

When I first saw the front of this coin, I was amazed (amazing original luster). When I tuned it over it was a real let down. Beauty OBV and the Beast REV.

one of my favorite series. Yes AU-58 details and has a typical weak strike on the lower left side of wreath. Doesn't look cleaned so that's a +.

Obverse is pretty , a little wear on front curls , tiny hit to the neck ; no big deal . I see what you mean about the flatten bow ,your guess is as good as mine . Graffiti kills it for this coin . Nice luster through out . AU-58 Details .
