I rarely buy insurance when I ship something that I sell on ebay, but I recently considered getting insurance for a higher value item. It looks like the default insurance on the ebay site is their ShipCover parcel insurance, which will cover up to $1000. I almost added the insurance, but when I checked the coverage exclusions, it says:

"THE INSURANCE DOES NOT INSURE:
Coins, bullion, loose diamonds or stones, stocks, bonds, currency, deeds, evidences of debt, travelers checks, money orders, gift certificates, calling cards, lottery tickets, admission tickets, or any other negotiable documents."

So it looks like buying shipping insurance on the ebay site affords no protection for a shipment of coins. I assume claims are rare since USPS is pretty reliable, but does anyone have any experience with this? I suppose I could go to the post office and buy insurance directly from USPS.

You do not need to go to the post office to get USPS coverage. You can do that from ebay, by switching the insurer in the drop down. also not limited to $1000 like Shipcover is...

Yeah if I did have insurance, I just made sure it wasn't that first one that defaults to.

I'll have to check that the next time I ship something. I couldn't find an option to choose USPS as the insurance carrier.

On the page where you are finalizing the label it's a drop down box that says shipcover. Click that and it gives you the option to change it to USPS

Imo, insurance on shipping coins is a scam/joke, but that being said, if you buy it through ebay, then the $ won't show up on the printed postage, and only you will know what the value is, and won't tempt the postal employees. If you want make sure it gets there, then just go Registered. Overnight express is good too.
