This is a 1940-S Mercury dime with a major die crack on the neck. It starts from the bottom rim and run up her neck through her head to the top rim. Opinions please and would it be worth sending it in?

It looks more like a lamination error than a die crack.
Rest in Peace

I do not believe it would be worth the expense of having the coin graded.

I can't tell if there is a lamination on the neck or a retained die break.

The coin was probably made from a worn die. The die was polished so much that Lady Liberty's nose is no longer attached to her face.

There's a bit too much glare for me to know what's really going on with that die crack.

This type of error isn't common, but there is a limited interest in such coins and the increase in value would probably not equal the TPG cost.

The only reason to send it in for grading is if you believe the value of the coin warrants it. The die crack adds nothing to the value.

I'm in the same boat. I agree that it is not worth submitting for grading.

Chances are that's related to the crack.

Bisecting obverse die cracks seem to be relatively common with Mercs of this era. We have a member who is actively accumulating different ones. It does not add value to anyone except someone seeking out those cracks, and very little at that. For most, it will actually detract from the value because the majority of collectors want coins as close to "pristine" as they can get.

Interesting .... but it makes sense.

This coin was probably among the last to be made with that die.
