Well it looks like the inevitable outrages prices on e-bay has me stuck in a hard place . I cannot finish any of my U.S. coin sets because I can't afford what the sellers on the bay want for their inferior coins let alone their gems . as far as I'm concerned the hobby in general has gotten way too expensive . And it's not that you can pursue online dealers for better prices as their usually higher than e-bay , and most of them don't offer photos of the coins they have for sale . Anyway I'm actually thinking about stopping all coin buying ,and just sit on what I have accumulated over the last 54 years . I'll be 68 next week . I think the time has come to stop paying ridiculous money on Numismatics and finally buy myself a couple of pairs of socks . Not to worry I'll still be posting on CCF, and giving you great guys my opinions on your coins .

Nice rant @t-bop! How about ditching the US coins and joining us over in medieval and ancient coin collecting?

Ive never used ebay and for lots of reasons. High prices are only one. Then too most have to pay paypal, insurances, postage and even some want restocking fees. Lots in mail, wrong coin sent and on and on. I just don't know why people use that place. I've gone to coin shows a lot. I know not everyone has access to coin shows so that is really a shame. Just can't beat seeing what you buy and lowest possible prices.

Agree with you that many prices on ebay are out of this world. Wishful thinking in many cases or same adds reposted month after month hoping for a bite. That being said, if you need socks, send me your duplicates and your junk and I'll back up a trailer full of socks in your driveway.

Quote: I cannot finish any of my U.S. coin sets because I can't afford what the sellers on the bay want for their inferior coins let alone their gems Tony, I completed the Dansco jefferson 8113 today, the Walkers, Franklin, and ASE, all the others I know I can't afford to complete so why bother? I live off a very limited income because of my messed up back but I have fun collecting what I can, wether it be roll searching or actually saving up enough to buy something fancy.

just carl: Can't disagree more. I've never been able to beat ebay prices at shows (I go to all the Whitman shows in Baltimore; I will buy there, but only because there are some things I would rather see in person to buy). Before I go to the show, I put together a list of what I want, check the sold prices on ebay, and then try to find the same items at the show for hopefully just a little more that ebay. So far, never found anything cheaper at the show.

I think you should collect socks. There are many different kinds and you'll never complete the set.

I agree ebay deals are better than shows or stores. I don't have much luck at either. Visiting my folks in AR and stopped at a local coin shop. The guy want $285 for an ungraded 1892 cc morgan that I graded vg-8 details scratches and $40 for an ungraded 1922 Peace dollar that looks like ms-62. Oh and an ungraded 1890 cc morgan in what looked like vf-20 for $160. I don't know why I bother with retail anymore.

I can certainly understand not wanting to sell on ebay with the environment they've created, but someone refusing to buy there is just hurting/limiting their own collection

I have used ebay almost exclusively. Mostly because it's the most readily available venue for me and I'm very familiar with it. There are some very reputable sellers there with pretty good deals and good pics. There are also many, many sellers who don't really know what they have. Most of the time that means superinflated prices or outright junk that's supposed to be "rare". Sometimes, that means you can score if search enough. I haven't tried much cherrypicking lately but, have had success in the past. I really need to make my first visit to my "LCS" which is about 35 miles away. Quote: I think you should collect socks. I've never bought a single coin on ebay. I've bought other things but never coins. Weird. I have some on line dealers I've learned to trust and who have higher quality stuff. I usually buy from them. I've also bought from Heritage on occasion. I've also never bought a pair of socks in years. My elderly parents for some reason always buy them for me for Christmas and my Birthday. It's always a given when I receive their package that inside will contain at least some white crew neck t-shirts and several pair of Gold Toe socks.

I love my Seal Skinz socks almost as much as I love my loonies. Keeps my feet from rotting in the bad weather during football season. Yes they cost me $50.00, but worth every penny. I shop on ebay too. Not for socks though.

@ Crazyb0 , Butch ,sure I have a bunch of mid MS coins ,but throughout the years I concentrated on high grade circs . Yes I am a perfectionist . 97% of everything I own are No Problem coins . I know a lot of you guys disagree on this ;but I'd rather have a hole unfilled for a 1909-S VDB then to stick an AG-3 Details in that hole . Oh ,and guys BTW ,I don't want to start collecting socks. I meant now that I'm not buying coins anymore ,I can buy a couple pairs of new socks .

As to prices at coin shows. Most think those large coin shows are the place to go. Far, far from true. Yes those places have very inflated prices and for good reasons. Most of the dealers there pay fantastic prices for a table. Some pay in the thousands of dollars for a table. Then dealers that come from other states stay at hotels, motels, pay for food, gas for their cars or trucks, etc. Some bring family members to help at the shows. ALL this has to be payed for with the sale of coins or coin stuff. Large shows are just not the place to go for bargains. Of course due to the above prices are excessive. Now go to smaller local shows where the dealers are from the area. They do not have to pay for all the above and usually just go home after the show. Around me most places charge $50 a table. And although I say small shows, one has from 80 to 100 dealers a Month. Dealers are repetitious and you get to know them. Some will actually look out for certain coins for you. Some have coin or hobby stores in the area and appreciate you even more if you stop by there. And too, these shows are almost always once a Month so you really get to know many dealers. No, I've been coin collecting for well over 60 years and from my experience, nothing beats a coin show. At least the ones by me.

My question is why buy from ebay when you can buy from friendly sellers here on the forum? I can somewhat understand why sellers are forced to charge so much when ebay charges more than 10%, paypal is another 3% and overall comes down to more than 15% - it adds up really quickly.
