Quote: I live in rural northern Michigan so my options are not good. Maybe traveling is not an option. However, you might want to check out small coin shows in Illinois. Around the Chicago area there are usually 3 to 4 coin shows a Month. Not the farthest place for you. Same in Wisconsin. Try looking up coin shows in Michigan. Same with coin clubs.

You can't blame the sellers on ebay for the prices. If people weren't paying them then they would lower them. They're charging what the market will bear. If this is through some type of deception on their part then shame on them, BUT if they are an honest dealer and pricing according to what others have paid then more power to them. The fact that I can't afford a given coin or choose not to spend what the seller is charging doesn't make the price to high. (I didn't mean this to sound confrontational though on re-reading I can see where it could sound so. I simple believe the seller can't be blamed for charging what people are willing to pay)

Well If you don't have a problem with most prices sellers are charging then good for you . But I'm just trying to get across the fact that I can't see paying very high prices for the few keys that I need to complete a few sets .

ebay is a great resource for me finding those Mercury dime varieties, sometime I paid exactly what regular prices for normal coin, but it has been rather tough finding those lately.

I'm in the same boat as TheForce. Living in a small city has a lot of agvantages but coin shops and coin shows are not included.

Agree. You have to understand your on-line options. Experiment with them. Be sure you have return options. Ask questions. Make offers. The internet is a rich sea of opportunities.

Quote:True - on ebay there are plenty of people bidding that have more money than brains! Then I guess the price of coins is being set by brainless people (Me being one of them as I buy MOST of my coins on ebay as there are no coin shops close enough to me for me to visit regularly and I believe I have gotten some real good deals). If I was selling I would not list my coins below what other comparable coins are selling for just on principle. To my way of thinking THAT would not be very smart...

Quote: I have been burned, and I have scored big Yep. I've definitely been burned but, buying coins on ebay is a relatively new venture for me and I take those experiences as lessons. I've also had some scores. Most purchases have been as expected/in the middle. I've recently started selling some low value coins on ebay. Many are errors, so the market is even more difficult to gauge. I've done some straight auctions with decent success. I've also listed some as BIN with Best Offer and gotten a couple bites and watchers on some of the others. It's kind of a never-ending expirement: toying and tinkering with the listings to try and create the most appeal. @T-BOP I understand what you mean about trying to fill in those last keys from ebay. That may not be the best place to look. At the very least, you'd have to be very patient and also make sure you're able to quickly view any new listings for what you are seeking. I really don't have any experience to speak of with shops or shows.

I am still a huge fan of coin shows, but I have recently been shopping ebay for Ikes. I have made three individual purchases from two different sellers for six coins total. These were BIN, not auctions, with free shipping. I do not think I could have gotten a better price at a coin show, but the risk is definitely different.

Unhappy with ebay prices? Take a look at Amazon. Sellers pushing the junk they can't sell on ebay at 50%-100%+ more than you might expect to pay on ebay.

Maybe it's just my narrow area of interest (Canadian silver), but the one thing I've noticed about ebay is that there are almost zero true auctions anymore. 10+ years ago almost everything was crazy with bidding. Now it's all Buy It Now and if you're lucky, a Make Offer button. One seller has had a particular details coin on there literally for YEARS. I guess it must not cost much to just keep on fishing.

Quote: Now it's all Buy It Now and if you're lucky, a Make Offer button. I actually prefer this. I invested a good bit of time looking at the coins I eventually bought, to the point that I was really, really looking forward to getting them in hand. I cannot imagine spending that much time on a a coin that I may or may not end up winning. This is not to say the gamble is wrong, it is just not me.

Maybe somebody can explain this to me... I put an MS-70 ASE up at 99c and it runs up to $39. I offer a 2nd chance one, identical, to the guy that bid $38.00 and he never buys. Meanwhile I have them up at BIN $38.50 and no one buys. Is it just the auction excitement? Are people going for the cheap thrill?
