Hi! I have this Mercury dime and a quick google search told me that it's highly counterfeit. That makes me assume this one is also fake. Before it finds itself forgotten in the back of a drawer, I thought I'd find out what you think! Thanks for any insight you can offer, I do appreciate it!   |

I'm leaning towards fake just looks off and the uneven wear is suspicious. Plus personally I'd never buy a 16D unless it was graded, too many counterfeits out there

Thanks to everyone for your responses!
I always feel bad walking into focused forums and starting out with a question, so I just wanted to say I appreciate everyone taking the time. If there's any indication it's real, I would certainly have it graded (though I've never done that!), but I assumed something would jump out to an expert to tell me one way or another, so I guess we'll see!
I've never collected coins, though I think it's something I might enjoy. I just have the problem that I never know what I'm looking at!

Don't let us stop you from at least taking to a coin show or a coin shop and see what they say in hand. I just wouldn't spend all the money getting it graded till I'm close to being sure it's real.

This was one of my first stops to get a feel whether it had a chance. I suppose I could drop by a coin shop to see what they think before I abandon all hope. I am located in Austria though, so I'm not sure how well they will know American coins.

This coin is definitely a fake. Look at the seam on the obverse rim of the coin. You can see the union line that goes around the center of the obverse rim showing that obverse and reverse were plastered together. Also the D mint mark does not look right and the surfaces look like a cast counterfeit.

If that was mine I'd take it to a coin show or coin shop for an examination. And then still might send it in to a TPGS. Some time ago I purchased a fantastic good looking 16D Merc for $5. It was a fake for sure but so few I showed it to could tell. A dealer I know told me he too purchased a fake one and he just couldn't tell for sure. He sent it in to a TPGS and it came back graded. He resent it to another place and it came back as a fake. I even bought one of those 1915 Mercury dimes on line and showed to some dealers at a coin show. You'ld be amazed at how many didn't catch on to that one. |

The shape of the 9 does not match that of a genuine coin. Note how the bottom of the nine comes much closer to the bottom of the one.  |

The strike has the appearance of a cast copy, it doesn't have any sharpness that is supposed for this grade. The type around the peripheral are mushy and again don't have thickness of a genuine coin. Also, the edge are filed away to hide the imperfection to make the appearance that it was in circulation.
I am 90% sure this is a cast counterfeit, if you can get a good picture of the edge and closer area of the mint mark, then we can further determine. Do you know the weight of the coin? Stick to magnet?
