When these first came out in 1965 they were nicknamed "sandwich coins" at least I remember hearing it on the news or in the newspaper. We were all so excited to see the new coins, not caring much about silver going away.
With a layer of copper showing in the middle when you look at the edge it looks like a sandwich with the meat in the middle when you cut a sandwich in half.
Now sometimes you will see that it is not centered looking at the edges, which is not an error nor unusual. They have been this way ever since ( with the exceptions of the 40% half dollars in the 60's ) and the special silver proof coins.
