Well, I went and done did it. Ordered a 1916 D in AG 3 condition from a dealer. They are sending it in to PCGS for me for grading. Now all I need is that 1942/1 to finish my album......

Please post pics when you receive. I haven't worked on my merc set for a while now. I should start focusing on it.

Hey John. Just out of curiosity, how much is the dealer charging you for the PCGS grading?

regularguy, $40 for 15 day turnaround, and $15 for shipping, each way - return to me. that makes $70. Kinda high, but I think it will be worth the cost for me in the long run.

Few questions. Are you keeping your coins in an album. If so are you planning on breaking the 16D out for the album? Planning on putting a note inside the album the 16D is in a slab? You said the only one left is the 42/41. Does that mean you have the 45 Micro S? What about the 42D/41? If you have a Whitmany Album, those now have a slot for those.
Here is an interesting note. If you have most or all of your Mercury dimes in an Album where you can see both sides, and the obverses are all lined up, turn the page and see how many have rotated reverses. I am a Mercury dime nut with well over 3,000 of them. I estimate about 20% or more have a rotated reverse to some degree.

just carl.

The album I have is an older Whitman no. 9413, it does not have a slot for the 1942D/41 or the 45 micro s. I do not have the 42/41, or the 42D/41, but I do have 2 45 S micro s, one in a 2x2, and one PCGS graded MS 62. I have no plans on breaking out the 1916 D, if PCGS doesn't body bag it for whatever reason. To date, other than gold proofs from the mint, it will be my most expensive acquisition. I have around 200 Mercury dimes at the moment, and have noticed a few of them have the rotated reverse. You may have started me down another path to my merc collection! lol Thanks for your input, I'll keep you posted on the 1916 D!

I would not crack out a a graded 42/1 or a 1916-D & 1921P&D even a 45-S micro out no mater the grade there to many counterfeits & China is still doing all key coin. plus if anything they would add $$$ to your set!

amac44,

I agree. Not so much for my sake, but the sake of my son and my collection! I figure he might dump a jar full of old coins, but he'll think twice (or three times) about dumping a slabbed coin. Plus I'm trying my darndest to keep up an Exel database of all my coins, a copy and instructions will be in my will! I hope he keeps the sets and good stuff, to add to and pass on to HIS son!

update!

received word from the dealer:

"We received notice from PCGS on Wednesday that the coin had been graded and encapsulated "AG-3", and it would be shipping this week. My guess is that you should be receiving it towards the middle to end of next week. If not, please let me know and I will do the necessary follow-up."
