I was reshooting some coins, and this was one of them. (Still not 100% happy with the results, but that's irrelevant.)

As I was zooming in and looking at the coin, I noticed something funky with the '0' in the date. I double checked it with the loupe, and it is just like it looks in the photo. At first I thought MD, but with moving the loupe (it's lighted), and redirecting the light, it's almost like a divot next to the 'doubled' inner 0. But then I noticed that the die polishing lines are present in that area, so now I'm just plain confused.

One thought I had was that maybe there was some overly aggressive die polishing, and the 0 was 'repunched' (which I don't think they manually punched dates in 1930) maybe to 'fix' the die?

If anyone has ideas, I'm all ears.

It appears to be a DDD, the doubling in the 0 reminds me of the 1955 (poor man's DD),but I'll wait to hear from other.

I agree with Chase007 on this one. Die Deterioration Doubling. It happens when the dies get very worn from all of the strikes.
Errers and Varietys.
Rest in Peace

That divot almost has to be a bulls-eye hit. Otherwise it is damaged die. that would RAISE the die face in the center of the 0, like this, made it just for you!

Makes perfect sense, and once I saw Chase007's response, I smacked my forehead in agreement. I also think there may be something to Crazyb0's theory.

So much for my discovery coin!

I'm thinking die polishing to remove die clash played a roll in the results we see. No re-punch was involved to my knowledge.

The obverse side of coin showing a nice example. Considering the die state it seems it might be a decent grade compared to others. If the reverse is as nice, then you may have something worth more than a pretty penny. Thanks, Doug.

It's in an NGC MS-66 CAC holder, so yup, it's a pretty nice coin.

NGC doesn't hand out 66 unless they are juicy. CAC sauce on top is truly yummy.
