150 well circulated second century denarii, just in from the last Vauctions. Did the math and this should just yield enough return to offset my wife's printed legging addiction. Mostly Antoninus Pius and Commodus, but a healthy mix with multiples from Lucilla and Crispina. And, wait... is that... As soon as I get tallies, I'll be posting them for sale here, then ebay in a few weeks.

Woah! What would the purchasing power of that handful have been at the time these were circulating?

The denarius had a purchasing power equivalent of something like $20, although obviously certain things were more expensive or cheaper then. 150 denarii would equal 6 gold solidi, about half a year's pay for your typical soldier. And I guess I should be more clear about the coin I pulled out. Clearly the seller mistook this one for Lucius Verus or maybe Marcus Aurelius; this is a denarius of Aelius Caesar, hands down the most difficult of the "good emperors" to acquire. He was the adopted son and heir of Hadrian (and the biological father of Lucius Verus) but suffered from chronically poor health and died about a year and a half after his appointment. Hadrian was forced to pick another heir, and although he wanted Marcus Aurelius, he was a young teenager at the time, so Antoninus Pius was chosen but compelled to adopt Aurelius and Verus as heirs from the start. I had been eyeing a denarius of Aelius on Vcoins for $155, and lost multiples on ebay for $100 bids. His inclusion here was a HUGE mistake on the seller's part!

Nice handful of coins Steve, It must feel good to feel the denarius on your hand, better than modern stuff.

150. That's a real handful? How long do you think it will take you to sell those off (after cherry picking, of course)?
Was that all in a single lot, or a bunch of lots?

What is a Vauction? I don't know a lot about ancient coins, sorry...
As for the coins, they look really nice! I probably won't be buying but I'll definitely watch the auctions.

Thanks all. This is actually two separate lots; one of 100 and another of 50. I'm hoping to get as many individual coins sold as possible; I'm expecting to end up selling many of them on ebay in small lots. I won't be doing too much meticulous sorting through and identifying; few of then have "special" reverses (meaning, most depict a standing or seated deity with the emperor's titles) so I wouldn't get much additional return on the dozens of hours that would take. In addition to the Aelius, I was able to upgrade my existing Antoninus Pius and Faustina I, and put aside a teenaged Marcus Aurelius Caesar that I had always wanted, but not enough to bid on separately.
