I've been working on my 50 piece type set of classic commemorative coins now for 61 months. I always keep between 50-60 different coins on my want list in the condition I'm after with a realistic price based on the most recent past sales. I was beginning to think that I would never find my "perfect" Hawaiian commemorative. During those 5 years I've seen several dozen of them sell in the grade I was after and in the price range I wanted to stay in. The problem was that so many of them, in fact almost all of them had partial toning here or there that was not at all attractive. Don't get me wrong, I have a number of toned coins in this type set, as well as in my collection. But I'm just a picky boy when it comes to toning. I realize that it is everyone's own preferences - but maybe not. The "ugly" toning always sold for the bottom of my price range while those with okay toning did a good deal better, price wise, and finally the very few that went for sale without the beautiful matte finish being "impaired" by toning was almost none. I bid on every one of them, even though not my "perfect" beauty and lost every one of those that I considered acceptable while staying at the top of my price range. As my set began its finishing run of forty found and ten to go, I really was worried about not finding my Hawaiian. I'd looked at every one sold on ebay (not many nice ones), Heritage (most of the nice ones), Great Collections (higher prices for those I liked), and Stacks (some beauties, but I always got stomped price wise). Even those that I bid on were not exactly what I wanted. When this one came up on Heritage, I decided I'd really hate myself for missing this beauty. So I upped by highest range by a full $500, and hoped I would land it. Obviously, I did, or I wouldn't be blathering on here. I did spend $300 of that $500 over my "limit" to get it, but when it arrived and I put it under my lights for the first time, I truly was in love. It was one of those teaching moments for me. When I find a coin that is magnificent, even if it is by my own measures, it's a lot easier to pay a little more for that special coin, rather than continuing to waste time better spent on other items on my want list. So here is the Hawaiian I fell in love with.

Fantastic coin, mox! The treatment of Captian Cook here is far nicer than the treatment the Hawaiian natives served up for him.

Thanks for posting. I am quite unfamiliar with commem designs as they are out of my areas of interest. The design is stunning and so is the condition. Kudos for your perseverance. The joy for some of us is in the chase and search and acquisition within a budget.

Muddler, I was afraid of it ending up as my last one, too.
It's amazing how many sell for $3000+ that are just not attractive. I was afraid if it were my last one that I'd get tired of waiting and buy a marginal example.
Keep the faith. Wait for it...wait for it...

Congrats on your latest addition! Terrific coin!
I agree that there are a good number of Hawaiian half dollars out there with unattractive toning, you have to be patient to find a brilliant coin that has not been overdipped.
You've likely encountered a number with yellowish toning - many (most?) of these can be traced to the coins held for years by the Bank of Hawaii. Some collectors seek out these coins for their originality and ties to the original distribution of the coins. After decades in the bank's vault, the coins were finally auctioned off in 1986.
It definitely pays to be patient when searching for just the right coin - and to know when to pull the trigger on "the one."
Thanks for sharing the images and the "collecting story" behind the coin!
