CoinHappy, can't really give an honest appraisal without pix of the coin. We trust your description, but a lot depends on a visual.

to CCF. It would have to grade at least at MS62 to justify all the costs involved to have it slabbed, http://www.coinprices.org/cgi/usrar...&search7=anyIf it was cleaned it most likely will come back with a details label. We need pics to really help you. John1

From what you write, it will almost certainly get a 'details' comment, but it should get graded despite that.
Potential value wise, probably not justified to be graded unless you think the potential value is high enough to justify the grading and return shipping fees.

Generally speaking a coin such as this one, 1878 Morgan 8TF, would need to grade problem-free Mint State to justify certification costs. If you are worried it is not genuine and/or a problem coin then consider returning the coin to the seller for a refund.

The answer to your question depends on what VAM it is. Something like a VAM-14.11 would be worth it whereas a VAM-21 would not. and to CCF!

Sending in to a place just to get it authenticated may be a waste of money. See if it sticks to a magnet first.

This is why I only buy certified coins online. The coins can look good in online photos but be deeply flawed. Now some of the photos I see here on CCF are out of this world. The coins pics here are just beautiful but they are not trying to deceived anyone either, just bragging.

No matter what it would straight grade for, the best grade you'll get from PCGS is "MS Details - Improperly/Harshly/etc Cleaned", or "UNC Details Cleaned" from NGC. The value of that coin in a details grade would not be worth it in my humble opinion. Essentially, potential buyers would look at AU value to determine what they would pay (at best), and that brings your (potential realized) value to somewhere in the neighborhood of $120. A single coin submission can cost as much as $80, (grading, shipping, etc.), so you'd be in the coin too much to warrant getting it graded.
Personally, I would return the coin, and if the seller had a no returns or anything, I'd open an item not as described case, (only if he doesn't agree to a return), and find a nice one graded.

Is it just my Mobile browser, or are there still no pics? There are varieties of the 1878 8TF which are valuable enough to slab even if circulated and cleaned, but we've no way to determine what VAM it may be.

How about adding a link to the auction. If the photos are decent we should be able to figure out what VAM it is and whether or not worth having graded. If the photos in the original auction made the coin look good I'm guessing there are hairlines that are only visible when tilting the coin just right?
