I think that provenance from Eric Newman is enough to guarantee a premium. At least for me, the history of a coin is not only the history of the type, its designer and the circumstances of its creation; it's also the history of the people who have held the coin and used it whether for circulation or in their collection. Thus I think any coin with a pedigree should get a premium; but a coin coming from such a famous numismatist, in my opinion, deserves even more.

You guys don't want any of these coins. They're way overpriced and overrated. When does the auction start today?

Yeah that was just silliness. The 1868 Seated dollar in au-50 I was interested in sold for $1,440.

It's highest dollar amount an 1868 au-50 sld has ever sold for. By like $300 if memory serves. Most sell ofr around 1k or lower. This example also had a light cleaning... wasn't original. Heritage wrote in the description that the coin is prooflike yet that wasn't the designation of the TPG. I was the underbidder. https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dol...dLots-101116

Ok so I went in to this auction with 3 coins that were on my target list. I'm a type collector so these were "common" type coins that usually are readily available but I thought, if I'm going to add one to my collection, they might as well have some provenance and be Col. Green/Newman collection coins. Well, apparently, so did a bunch of other people because these coins were going well over 2x Numismedia and PCGS Coinfacts pricing. Oh well, I guess I'm not the only one who appreciates darker, nicely toned original coins. I did manage to snag a nice Large Cent that I'm happy to add to my collection.

Don't be stingy, Chester. Post the links! That should be a CCF rule.

Here are the two I lost. I thought they went for strong money all things considered. https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dim...ption-071515https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-hal...ption-071515I'm kind of mad at Heritage right now. It's the first time I bought from them in probably 4-5 years. The buyers premium for the coin I won was $34 which I get...it was included in the total cost when bidding but Shipping and Sales Tax added another $32 on top of that. I guess you get used to it and factor it into your bid but I'm kind of glad I didn't get the two coins above now.

Sales taxes depend on what state your in. I'm in Missouri where coins aren't taxed. If you have friends or family in tax free state have the coins shipped to them.

The Heritage auction proves that the Eric Newman coins DO get a premium, whether we would pay it or not. I do not think that I would pay a premium, but that is obviously not important.

This coin gave me my first woodie compliments of Col. E.H.R. Green! I kept looking and looking at it and there was just something about it that I couldn't resist.
