It looked kike four canvas bags of 5000 each sitting upright side by side. I just estimated one pound for approximately 150 coins, nothing scientific, just a WAG!

Shoulda went wit the standard estimate of US coin weight is 147 per pound!

I was called a bushel pail but maybe thats just a name given to it. Any way the pail measures

- 14 inches dia at the top
- 9 inches high
- 11 inches dia at the base

No farmer would call it a bushel pail.
It's a two gallon bucket, two Imperial gallons,a handy measure for Canadian farmers.

Okay, that makes sense. I agree with what others said before about this being a good contest idea. Except, I guess, the specifics would have to be worked out better.

Yes, that pail is way way smaller than a bushel basket. As I guessed before, a REAL bushel basket would have weighed about 650 lbs, depending on whether they were full copper cents or alloys/plated.

I wasn't even close..........

At this years RCNA convention, a nice display was also full of similar pennies. Unfortunately, someone tried to pick it up by the handle and the metal side attachments ripped right off ..and it was an antique pail..and it was ruined..

You can see the chain (and not the handle) supporting the full weight in this weighing..

A galvanized steel bucket like that could not hold up to 400-600 pounds like some of the guesses.

Why couldn't it hold that weight? I would assume the weight would transfer through the bottom of the bucket to the floor. I wouldn't imagine the sides of the bucket would be stressed very much.

lookit how the handles are attached to the frame. Probably rated at no more than 150lbs. See how it's bending inwards?

Darn! I still woulda been FOURTH PLACE!

I googled "how big is a bushel bucket" what came up was, 1 bushel bucket holds 9.037 U.S. Gallons. Perhaps that's why a lot of the answers were 400+ pounds.

Being I started this I'm going to build a wooden box to specs of the capacity of a US bushel. I need to make it strong enough to lift and weigh it. My scale is good for 6000lbs so I'm good there. The inside measurements I'm using are
12 inches by 12 inches by 14.93 inches high, that equals 2150.42 cubic inches OR 35.24 liters - 1 USA Bushel
Correct my measurements if I'm wrong.
