Can you kindly take a look at the pictures here and tell me if you see anything special about this coin. What are those "dots"? Are they extra metal? Do you see a doubling on the "9"?

Thanks

That coin has seen a rough life. I think the extra "dots" were something that stuck to the coin sometime after it left the mint.

There are some markers on this coin that can help identify the dies that produced it.

The obverse has a die crack at the last A of GRATIA and the I of REGINA was repunched higher that the T and A. Those markers are consistent with Haxby obverse 37.

On the reverse the stem to leaf 9 looks like reverse die F7. If it is F7 there would be no repunching of the 9.

You can check out those dies on Dr. Haxby's website to compare your coin.

It's either been in the ground at some point or, run over by horse and wagon.

Beats me. Have you tried using acetone to see if they might somehow come off?

Sadly, there is nothing that can save this cent...not good enough as a filler ...

well, in my opinion there's absolutely nothing "sad" about htat penny.
Were I too see it in a bin like many of the other large cents I have bought "in the wild" of late, I'd snap it up in a heartbeat!!
I haven't even begun to try to wrap my head around the variations of the 1859 pennies...
I will look into that link in a moment - thanks you 'Phil310' for sharing it!!
