New to the Forum. Any thoughts on how this happened? It appears to have raised plating that is overlapping. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

@PE, first welcome to CCF. Second, that looks a lot like clear glue on the surface of your quarter (perhaps with an imprint of a washer). Can you give it a little soak in acetone and see if that extra material becomes removable?

I agree, looks like the obverse was glued to something to show off the reverse design.

Spence, thanks for checking it out. Seems to be raised metal is very sharp to touch near the letters "Quarter Dollar".

Kind of looks like someone glued a washer to the coin and now it came off.

Spence, I took your advice and soaked the coin in 100% Acetone for about 1.5 hours. I was amazed too find out that there was no change in the coins appearance. I thought for sure that there was a glue type substance also on the surface. As you can see in the pic that it has the same appearance. It does look a lot cleaner though. What would you recommend next?

There are some 2 part commercial epoxies that, after curing, aren't affected by acetone. So it might be something like that as when they cure they get very hard.

Thanks for the info Mark1959. Maybe a Scanning Electron Microscope would be able to determine what the material is.

Cured epoxy probably won't be affected by acetone. From what I've read, methylene chloride (or dichloromethane) is what you want, the active ingredient in common "paint stripper". Depending on the type of epoxy, boiling water may lift it. Heat seems to be the enemy of epoxy bonds because it cures thermally, not by solvent evaporation.

I just read this stuff so, it may be worthless.

@PE, the more I look at this, the more I'm convinced that your coin has a layer of glue stuck on top, with a partial impression of a washer or other round flat object with a central hole. As @spruett001 points out, perhaps a previous owner of this coin had created a numismatic refrigerator magnet.

You could chase down various solvents to find one that will soften or remove the glue/epoxy if you have the time and intellectual curiosity, but my vote is that this coin is worth no more than 25 cents and can be safely spent.
