PLEASE NEVER clean another Vicky Large Cent with ACETONE!  If you have to, use goo-gone on a Q-TIP very gently. Much better and much safer. Acetone can damage the toning (and ruin a coin like Zonad's 1882H Triple Die..just look at it - completely ruined and body bagged by PCGS https://www.PCGS.com/cert/32729650Take this from the person who has the FINEST Large cent variety collection in the world (yes, me). https://www.PCGS.com/SetRegistry/ca...meset/156258Edited by canadian-varieties

trust me this coin looks perfect in color no off color what so ever, I have used goo gone as well but I have never seen acetone affect any vickys that I have done

" I have never seen acetone affect any vickys that I have done" oh wonderful, so you send all your Acetone-cleaned Vicky's to PCGS and their chemical sniffers clear them as "uncleaned" and slab them instead of body-bagging them correct? Look at Zonad's body bagged 1882H Triple Die. It doesn't show up in the PCGS population report. It cannot be included in any Registry sets. No one knew it even existed until my 1882H Triple Die was included in the Population report and remains the ONLY one ever slabbed by PCGS. Zonad's 1882H Triple Die coin value probably dropped 95% after he cleaned it with acetone. It was a perfectly fine uncleaned Vicky Large Cent until then, sitting in an old ICCS cert, undisturbed. But no - he had to CLEAN IT - maybe he too thought it looked PRETTY - well PCGS DIDN't - they body bagged it as garbage. You may have just done the same to yours. Probably turned it from a find of the year $10,000 coin to a cleaned ruined $200 coin, because you, like Zonad, dont know what you're doing with Large cents.  Edited by canadian-varieties

Readers, this person has no clue what they're talking about and his advice, if taken, will damage your coins. Ah, leave it to Canadians-varieties to stir up unnecessary drama.
To be honest the one gidjit posted looks fine (uncleaned). And every other coin I have seen PROPERLY acetone treated looked better afterwards. I don't know if maybe the other one was treated with nail polish remover or something like that but it most likely wasn't acetone (or if so then it was done very improperly somehow).
However from what I have seen q-tips tend to leave hair lines and scratches, and I don't entirely know what goo-gone is, but from the sounds of things I will guess its no good.
If You prefer to use those on YOUR OWN coins however that's fine with Me, but don't go telling people that this is the "correct" way to treat a coin when it would seem to be the exact opposite!

Goo-Gone is a hydrocarbon-based solvent sufficiently strong that it's the chemical of choice for removal of caked chewing gum and graffiti. Its' use on a coin indicates a damaging lack of understanding of appropriate coin conservation. Q-tips, used properly (meaning when you should as much as when you could), have their place in coin conservation. But, like anything which has the capability of mechanically altering the surface of a coin when misused, careful consideration has to be given to whether or not it's an appropriate tool for the task at hand, and the technique employed with them. |

So now we're advocating cleaning hundred year old copper coins with acetone? Soak each one? Surely you have an acetone purity testing process that goes along with that right? No? Gidjit, how pure is your acetone? Did you get it at your local hardware store? Do you know what's in it? How many acetone cleaned coins have you gentlemen sent to and cleared with PCGS?
