I'm not finding a match in this instance, although maybe that's simply a case of my not being knowledgeable enough to even be looking in the right place. It's a bit oversized at about 28 mm in diameter, and perhaps a little on the thin side as well at only 1 mm. Price paid was minimal, but I'd still be a little disappointed if it turns out to be merely a reproduction or fantasy piece.

Pretty sure it's not Chinese, Vietnam, Korea, or even Japan maybe? Have seen the reverse somewhere in resources, but where, idk?

@sap or one of our other experta on Asian cast coins can weigh in when they notice this thread, but this looks like a 11 waves type 4 Mon from Japan to me. If so, it would have been cast between 1769 and 1859 AD. Here is a website with loads more info:

It's authentic.
And very nice pictures. There are a couple of things worth pointing out for later comparison with other coins.
One is the texture of the field. These coins were cast in sand and the machine copies do not look the same.
Second is the file lines visible on the rim. After casting. the high points were filed to give a uniform flat appearance.
I may be able to add a photo, but my camera is frozen right now. (Long story, hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving, my family is dysfunctional.)

Here is an example of a major variation for comparison. They are the 21 wave and the 11 wave types.

Here is another 11 wave type for examination. Note the file lines and cast fields.
A coin with little wear would have sharp flat high points, and fine sharp file lines.

Part of my initial confusion regarding this coin was that it was being offered along with another cash coin alleged to be Japanese, but that I readily recognized as a very ordinary Chinese issue.

Spence -

Thank you for that informative link.

Chute72 -

Would you judge my example to be from the Ansei minting?

I appreciate your faith in my knowledge, but am just a beginner with the cash coins and cannot say the source mint of your coin.
I'm still buying books, and would do so at a faster pace if I didn't keep getting seduced by another coin deal.
Good luck with your transaction, and sharp eye.
The real experts may still be on the road from the holidays.
