Not my cup of tea. Quote: I think any silver in MS65 blast white is better than MS65 toned, because toning is in an unstable, transitory state, especially so for rainbow toned coins.
While I might agree with this statement on a modern silver coin, any 100 year old coin that's blast white has most likely been dipped and stripped of it's natural skin. Personally, and we all have our own tastes, I have a preference for coins that show their age and originality. From my own experience, naturally toned rainbow Morgans are quite stable once they have been removed from the environment that caused the toning. My most recent purchase has not changed one iota since Flanagan bought it in 1994. Andy Kimmel and the late Mike DeFalco could tell you of rainbow Morgans that have not changed in a much longer time frame than that. Fact is, the toning can actually have a protective effect on a coins surfaces.

I think a blast white coin is more likely to show the effects of toning over time than an already toned coin. I mean the toned coin may change but I suspect the changes would not be as noticeable. I have purchased MS white coins that have toned in their holder. One was an NGC MS-65 White designated coin that developed a cross cross fabric pattern on it. Regarding the poll, the ugly and don't like it side clearly out-number the beautiful and like it side. I didn't vote but I do like it. But, overall, I guess this is not the type of toning that people find attractive. I find these types of polls informative to get other collectors perspective.

Not a fan of this toned coin . Although there's a lot more Seated coins out there with this type of toning than blast white ones .

I don't like it either, but if you do and it comes back AT after submission, you're out a lot of dough.

It looks like I am in the majority here; I do not like the toning.

I think the only reason this hasn't been dipped is the toning is hiding something... Just my opinion. If this coin was in my collection it would be blast white by now

Would have to see this one in person. Don't care for the color it's displaying in the photo but if it's actually got some rainbow to it... That's a different story.

ICKY, That's my reaction when I see that coin. The toning looks brown like dirty clouds. And what's under those dirty brown clouds? I wouldn't dip it for fear it might look worse.

As advanced as this toning is, you'd have to completely destroy it to remove the color.

Of course, this entire thread is based on the images provided. As others have stated, the coin could have a very different appearance in hand. As with any higher value coin, I have to wonder why the consigner did not have it slabbed.
