Coin contact that hit the mint mark and the 9 damaged it a bit. The attaching upper serif to the center area is probably mint mark punch damage.

Agree - looks like the upper serif ball was pushed down and over just a bit.

I think that we're looking at the progression of a soon to have been filled mintmark. I see die breaks and a shifting surface due to die erosion in the upper s loop of the mint mark. The lower s loop looks normal to me. The mark in the E side looks like normal planchet just look at the color no raised area just color difference.

In order for the upper loop to be filled in, it would take a large die chip to break out of that area. That doesn't look like it will happen. Just a circulation bump on the mint mark at 10:00. Looks like part of the same hit that the 9 took at 7:00.
