This is a 1940 Mercury dime with doubling on the date ,I'm pretty sure it is md but have a couple questions. How is it possible to have that much of a spread on only 3 out of the 4 numbers (1-9-0) and having a slight clockwise roatationfrom the bottom. Is this md or is this possibly a rpd and a different punch was used for the re- punch? Any help is appreciated.

A Mercury dime is considered a Classic Coin, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention.

It would be dramatic MD if it turned out to be...i am no Mercury dime expert. It doesn't look like devices are reduced though?

Rest in Peace

Nothing even remotely on VV. The thickness on 40 seems normal for the date on D/S mints. What strikes me is this, all four digits have the exact same shift, direction and distance with flat like design of MD. The listings for other 40's is way more subtle. Think its MD.

Crazybo can you see a shift on the 4? I can't , it looked to me like it had taken a hit and flattened it but that's why I come here with my questions you guys have seen it all and I can always count on good answers .

This is unquestionably MD. The doubling is in the same direction wherever it can be seen (slightly to the southwest). The degree of doubling is the same wherever it can be seen.

The interesting question here is why the 4 appears not to show the same MD. I would like to see this coin under a microscope instead of in a photo. It's my guess that under a scope you would see more of what you expect on the 4.

You also could try taking photos with the light hitting the coin from different directions. I am pretty sure I see traces of the expected doubling along the bottom of the horizontal bar of the 4

I think the SW directional MD has been obscured on the 4 by wear. The 0 barely shows it and with a little more wear may have disappeared as well.

Thank you all for your comments. I had a hunch this was md just had some questions. I'm still relatively new (less than a year) to collecting and have enjoyed it thanks to the help and knowledge you have all willingly shared with me and others in the ccf family. You folks are great!
