So I'm trying to not get too excited but after purchasing a micro scope and taking a closer look at some nice wheat pennies I saved, due to their excellent condition, I found a 1945 D that is definitely DDO and DDR. It is extremely difficult to see with the naked eye, but obvious under the microscope. I searched for other examples of this variety, to help me determine its value, and found none. Do I have an extremely rare error on my hands! What do you think this coin might be worth? Thanks! -Werewolf

Quote: I searched for other examples of this variety, to help me determine its value, and found none. Obviously, without pictures anything I say is mere speculation. However, to your point, that is generally an indication that it is not a true DD. A DD is not an event that randomly happens, it is a die variety. If there is 1 coin struck from that die, there is almost always going to be more.

So in the pictures, I feel like there's true doubling in "e pluribus unum" on the reverse. Looking again, I'm not sure about "in God we trust", there's definitely something going on there, even if not true doubling. There's an error in the L in liberty, I don't see doubling there though. I didn't post pictures of the date, because I didn't see anything strange there, but here's a pic of that too. Maybe you guys see something I don't. I posted some regular pictures of the coin too, so that you can get an idea of a possible grade range. Should I get this coin graded? I'm pretty new to this so thank you guys for your help!

Unfortunately, it looks like your coin is suffering from Die Deterioration, and is not a true doubled die. When dies begin to wear out from continuous use, some of the design elements begin to stretch out towards the edge of the die. This is showing pretty clearly on the tops of the letters on your coin, flowing towards the rim. It often gives the illusion of a doubled die, but is just the result of an overused die. You can see the die flow lines quite nicely above the word PLURIBUS on your coin. Keep looking though, you never know what you might find. Very good clear pictures too, that is always important in trying to figure out what is going on with a coin.

Looks like the 'IN' was damaged probably in a vending machine probably years ago.
