I wonder if anyone else finds something fascinating about seeing piles and piles of common date classic coins--Indian Head Cents, Buffalos, Mercuries, SLQs, WLHs, etc., even ones that are dateless and therefore basically numismatically worthless.
I think what I find alluring is that at one time, this was what people used. So it's like traveling back in time--you're becoming someone who lived 75-100 years ago.
And you can think that, at one time, every single one of these coins was brand-new, shiny and uncirculated! Just imagine!
So even though many people malign these coins, you can buy--if you choose--a nice lot of "junk" coins for very little money. And they can have just as magical a place in one's heart as a BU 09-SVDB. Edited by jpsned 12/01/2017 7:00 pm

jpsned,
This is why I find circulated coins, even VG's, to be attractive, for the reasons you mentioned. It really takes you back in time to when that coin was in circulation, and to think of where that coin traveled, and who bought what with it. I might also mention that when I look at old photos from 1900 or earlier, and see crowds of people on city streets, I think of the same thing, just imagine all the types of coins that we pay big dollars for now, rarities and key dates and all, in their pockets.

I enjoy having them so I can give them as tips at Big Bobs cafe. Also the Quick Trip and such. Giving a neat coin along with my regular tip gets me waitresses fighting to wait on us.
Our A&W had its 50th anniversary not long ago. They had a vintage car contest at the same time. I paid my entire tab with old coins.
My grandkids love old coins and they all have a treasure box. I get more enjoyment passing them around than hoarding those types.
See my contest. I'm giving some pretty cool stuff away right now.

Thinking about this a little more, I would really like to put together a nice pile of worn common date Barbers; dimes, quarters and halves. That would be cool to sift through your fingers, wouldn't it?

@jpsned, when I saw this thread, I immediately thought of @finn's auction: http://goccf.com/t/299965I guess we all have slightly different definitions of "classic coins".

Vote me in for circulated coins. I love coins in cigar boxes too!

Was over at the VA this afternoon, gave a buffalo and Wheat cent to a kid about 8, his father got more excited about them than the kid! Great conversation starters, yea, it IS history!

I am currently starting a F to VF set of Morgan's. Sometimes I think it is more of a miracle these worn coins were in the wild and survive with no problems than uncirculated examples. I really enjoy circulated problem free original coins. Helps with the budget too.
