So, I was bored today and rummaged through my plethora of change in jars. I came across a 1982-D penny that looked different in that the date is small. Is this normal? Comparing it to another one (that took me 100 years to find), it appears the date on the one is quite a bit smaller than the other.
Production error or?

@ksw442, first welcome to CCF. Second, please attach a pic to this thread so that we can take a look at your coin. I will say that there are small and large date varieties of 1982 D cents. Here is a link which may be useful: http://www.Lincolncentresource.com/...es/1982.html

Attached is a photo. One on left in the smaller dated one. Right is larger.

Also found some pre-65 nickels. Other than that, nothing of interest at all.

I don't know much about coins. Just more or less seeing what is found in common pocket change. It took me a second, but it just seemed different in size than what I had been looking at. Came across another 1982-D and it confirmed it. Probably nothing special, just seemed strange.

Now if your small date 82 D weighs 3.1 grams you have a winner.

I'll have to go buy a dope scale and weigh it. What's the significance of 3.1g?

If it weighs approximately 3.1 grams, it is likely a copper planchet. I believe there has only been one copper 82D small date found. It would be worth thousands of dollars. I would gladly give you your original asking price at that time.
Edited to add "likely"
