Hey all,

Just a curious question about a $1 coin I have kept on me for a while now. Does anyone know what kind of error this is? And how common is it?
Sorry about the quality of the photo best I could do with my phone

Thankyou all in advance :)

Sorry, Looks like PMD (Post Mint Damage) to me also. Flat rim at approx 3-4k most likely from where the coin was 'held' while damage was being inflicted.

Agreed, post-mint damage. From the looks of the other side, it has seen considerable circulation. It is unreasonable that a coin with such an obvious defect would have remained in circulation for very long, especially as it would be rejected by vending machines for being too light. Banks are obligated to withdraw and not reissue such badly damaged coins.

For the cause, I would surmise it is either deliberately manufactured, or was perhaps caught in machinery such as a lawnmower or wood chipper.

A large amount of metal has been sheared off, similar to scraping a knife across butter.
The coin had to be constrained to resist movement when the shearing happened.

If you look at the edge of the coin on the left of the picture, I am sure that you will find some sign of that constrainment on the obverse side of the edge, below the shear.

Most definitely post mint damage.
