@OJC, not doubting you, but rather trying to learn. Why isn't this more likely PMD?

Thanks Spence, I'm trying to do the same. I assume is is a lam. I would think if it were PMD, the rim would be affected unless it were a precision hit. Also, coop says that lams tend to be linear. It looks similar to other lams I have found but I am not sure myself.

If this were PSD, then the area in question, would not be ghost like were the lamination peeled off. It would take on the shape of what damaged the coin. Note on this lamination, the straight line pattern? Also note the lamination peel was uneven in depth. Hope this helps to identify them for you.

That is a great image. I hope someone can make an educational image of it. Looks like I probably won't be able to make them. When I save images now, I can't change file names or edit still. So I hope someone makes one for your image. It shows the depth and straightness for teaching about them.

I agree that these are awesome pics! And I guess that I am always being just a bit skeptical about errors if I could envision a way to make them. Here is what I was picturing--a thin chisel-like implement could theoretically make a parallel-sided edges and perpendicular tidemarks if it was used on the surface of a coin similar to this:

Many of the other examples of laminations posted on CCF seem to have slightly ruffled edges where the lamination existed but didn't completely peel away. That said, I trust @coop's conclusion completely and so yes this must be a lam.

Why Topic Titles are Important

The title of your topic is very important. Let's say you need help attributing an 1896 Morgan Dollar....

  • Horrendous: Help!

  • Bad: Need help with coin

  • Better: Need help with Morgan Dollar

  • Good: Need help with 1896 Morgan Dollar

  • Awesome: Need help with VAM on 1896 Morgan Dollar

This enables the members with expertise pertaining to your question to easily find and answer your question. The title of the topic also becomes the title of the topic's web page, which enables us to attract more collectors to the site. The more members we have, the more we learn.
