This is basically what happens:
If paper is not fed into the press ink on the printing plate will transfer to a steel roller. The press operator then has to stop the press and clean the roller. (The roller helps apply pressure to the paper against the printing plate)
The press operator uses a solvent soaked rag to clean the roller. Any residual ink left on the roller will transfer to the paper when they restart the press. As the press continues running the transferred image will get weaker and weaker as the ink on the roller goes away.

It's nice to see errors you don't have to squint to see. Congratulations.

Very nice indeed ... Wondering why your 2nd and final notes serial numbers both end in 1177A .. but they appear so different in the photos provided?

Wondering why your 2nd and final notes serial numbers both end in 1177A .. but they appear so different in the photos provided? I suppose because they are different notes. The PCGS note is serial # X09591177A, while the unslabbed is X09571177A, that's a twenty thousand number difference.

Very nice. I can't believe you found three that end with 1177!

I will admit, it took me a while to figure out the serial number thing too. This should be an awesome lot and I can't wait for it. I'm hoping the non-graded notes are at least AU.. or maybe even UNC!
Westernsky had a great explanation. I couldn't have described it as well as he did.

You do realize the three notes ending in 1177 are from the same sheet, right?

551177 is position F4 571177 should be G4 591177 is position H4
They are the bottom three notes in the far right column of the same sheet.

I did not know that. Well then -- not quite as exciting as I thought.
Still a great pick up.
