My Dad, who was a banker for most of his life, is getting up there in age and decided to start getting rid of stuff. He gave me a metal box of coins he's collected over the years. I'm sure he got many when he was in Italy during WWII. So I'm just looking through to see what we have, looking them up online, and feeling overwhelmed. I'm thinking we'll sell them on ebay. I've read several of the pages of the Appraising a Coin Collection page on this site, but need to find time to read more. For now, I thought I'd ask about one coin, which goes for between a few bucks and $500 on ebay. I guess I'm looking for advice. Should I take the time to learn about each coin and figure out its value before posting on ebay, or would I be better off finding a local dealer and just take the whole lot off our hands? I'm only able to shoot with my iPhone at the moment. Hopefully the image quality is usable.

Nice coin with a low mintage, but worn to Fine or so condition. The value is towards the lower end of the scale, perhaps $65 at best, probably around $50 is a fair price.

to the forum sjmills IMHO I would research each coin in order to get a better understanding of not only what you have, but also a value. And of course, low mintage coins usually bring a better premium. If you can, download the PCGS grading app. This will help you determine the grades of the coins. The higher the grade, the higher the value. Good luck! And looking forward to your posts.

If you have the time, you would be better off learning about each coin before selling. Not only will you most likely get more for them, but you will also have gained knowledge.

This coin is in rather typical grade for this date. Scarce - ish coin to get hold of these days. Typical weak "C" in "CYPRUS", under the crown, don't know why that is.
NGC World coin values is a good website to research coin values.

Don't be in a rush-take a bit of time to do some research. How many coins do you have? 100? 1000? If you have a lot, a dealer will not likely price each individual coin, especially if a lot are common. It is better if you know what the valuable ones are before you even consider selling them. Many foreign coins have a very thin market in the US, so ebay might be the way to go.

Thanks for all the advice. Good point, oriole, about not being in a rush. There are around 100 coins and less than a dozen bills; British, Canadian, Italian, Mexican, plus many others. Then lots of American; Mercury dimes, Liberty dollars, etc.
