I'd guess the glob of stuff is residual metal from the coin being soldered (or welded) or is some type of corrosion.

It looks like it was removed from a mount.

I agree with @otto. Perhaps it had a pin mount as there may have been some smoothing of the metal at 9 o'clock too?
